The Eyes That Gaze at Peace (Luke 12:32)

Kim Sungjae, NCC General Secretary There was God’s plan that was beyond people’s thought in the time of 40 years Moses and the Israelites, the people of Exodus, journeyed for Canaan. The pillar of cloud in the daytime and the pillar of fire in the night were their guides, and Moses and his people didn’t lose them. When the people asked God that they reach the land of Canaan and be protected by God until they get there, God asked the people that they would not lose the guide He gave even in the midst of trouble in the desert, and that they grow as people advancing united as one by trusting and obeying God. The road we Christians head for Canaan called “peace” is the same. The politics have grown corrupt like a desert where plants have withered, and propaganda that whips up people’s hostility, anxiety, and hate dazzle us. However, God is asking that we Christians stand firm on God’s word, make it our guide, keep on going the road heading earnestly for the peace the Lord indicates, say “No” to what we should say no, without closing our eyes to the corrupt politics, being embarrassed, manipulated. The Lord speaks to the Christians who work for the peace today as ever, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) Because of this voice of the Lord, the peace we aim at has already begun as console, encouragement, and hope.
